AS/2 Messaging
AS/2 is the definitive new
messaging standard for secure message exchange over the Internet, based upon certificate
securiity and the S/MIME protocols. It enables the sender of a message to
know that a message has been delivered successfully, the receiver to know that the
message definitely originated from the apparent sender, and both parties to know
that the message was not interfered with or corrupted in transit.
Where appropriate the message can be securely encrypted. AS/2 is essentially
HTTP based, enabling messages to be sent synchronously and directly.
SmartsIntegrator provides extensive AS/2 support in the form of the SmartsIntegrator
AS/2 Gateway, and AS/2 send and receive transport providers, as well as a sophisticated
tracking and management interface.
The SmartsIntegrator AS/2 Gateway is available as a free download from
ftp://smartsintegrator.com/SmartsDownloads/SmartsIntegratorAS2Gateway1400_0.zip.
It's an IIS web application that exposes the HTTP interface for incoming AS/2 messages.
You will need IIS 6.0 or later installed (on Windows 2003, Windows 2008, XP, Vista or Windows 7).
Essentially this gateway receives incoming AS/2 messages and routes them to a SmartsIntegrator
database.
The gateway is configured by running the SmartsIntegrator AS/2 Gateway Configuration
utility, found in the SmartsIntegrator AS/2 Gateway Program Group of the Start menu after installation and shown below :

Essentially you select an associated SmartsIntegrator database, plus the certificate
to be used for signing receipts, a response email address and optionally a set of
certificates defining the parties from which you are prepared to accept messages.
The ASP.Net account under which the SmartsIntegrator AS/2 Gateway runs (NetworkService
by default) will need access to the selected database, and will need to be a member
of any security group defined for Queue Access in SmartsIntegrator. SQLServer
role wt_queueOnly defines the minimal SQLServer permissions required.
This account will also need access to any certificates used for signing or decryption
- follow the link from the Confioguration form for an easy way of assigning these
rights. All certificates used by the AS/2 Gateway need to be in the LocalMachine/My,
LocalMachine/TrustedPeople or LocalMachine/AddressBook stores.
Note that the AS/2 Gateway is only required in order to receive AS/2 messages -
outgoing messages are sent directly onto the Internet (though the Gateway will be
required if asynchronous receipts are specified). Also note that any number
of AS/2 Gateways may be installed (for load balancing or redundancy purposes etc.),
but only one per web server.
So the AS/2 Gateway routes messages into the SmartsIntegrator database, where they
can be viewed by selecting the AS2 Inbox view from the SmartsIntegrator Explorer
tree. A Receive Port can then pick up these messages by matching on various
criteria including the signer certificate, the 'From' field and any ClientId parameter
specified in the URL. It can then process and route the messages to other
Ports or Workflow instances.
A SmartsIntegrator Send Port can specify the AS/2 Send transport in order to send
AS/2 messages. On selecting this transport, two additional tabs will be created
on the Port Configuration form enabling the appropriate destination URL, encryption,
signature and receipt options to be provided. To reiterate, the AS/2 Gateway
is not required for outgoing AS/2 messages unless the asynchronous receipt option
is selected. Outgoing AS/2 messages which have not yet been acknowledged
are shown in the AS/2 Outbox view from the SmartsIntegrator Explorer tree
AS2 auditing can be enabled via the SmartsIntegrator System Settings (in the SmartsIntegrator
Explorer), and in this case all AS/2 events, messages and receipts will be logged.
AS/2 audit events can be viewed by selecting the AS2 Audit view from the SmartsIntegrator
Explorer tree.
The URL to which as AS/2 message may be submitted via the Gateway is the URL of
the Gateway root, plus /Submit.aspx. The receipt URL is the URL of the Gateway
root, plus /Receipt.aspx. Both these URLs may have a ClientId parameter added
to them, e.g. http://serverAddress/Submit.aspx?ClientId=Client1.
